Tynemouth - Long Sands South Beach

A half mile stretch of fine golden sand backed by dunes. It is a rural style beach in a very urban location. Due to its size, the beach is very popular with those wanting to bathe, surf, kayak, canoe, play beach sports or just relax.

Nature and Wildlife

There is a coastal walk which runs from North Shields to Whitley Bay. Signs inform visitors of the local history and wildlife. There is also a castle on route. Tynemouth has an abundance of rock pools close to the beach area.

There is parking available for over 150 cars. including disabled spaces. There is a charge for using the car park.

Dogs are banned from 1st May to 30th September. Dog bins are provided at the beach.

Access

By car from the A19 onto the A1058 at the Silverlink roundabout. North Shields. Follow the A1058 all the way to the beach. Access to the beach is down a ramp at the south end of the beach next to the car park. Disabled access is gained from the south

Public Transport

Bus No. 306 from Newcastle runs to Tynemouth. There is also a rapid transport system (the metro) which runs from Newcastle Airport and Central Station to Tynemouth Station. 5 minutes walk from the beach.
